Athletes often rehearse movements in their minds before performing. Skiers imagine every turn. Divers mentally complete every rotation. Research has shown that vividly imagining movement can activate many of the same brain networks involved in performing it.
Should pianists do the same?
At first glance, the answer seems obvious. Imagine a freer wrist. Imagine a broader elbow motion. Imagine lighter, faster fingers.
But perhaps the more important question is not whether we should imagine movement.
It is what kind of movement we are imagining.
Many attempts to improve piano technique begin with a visible movement.
Raise the wrist.
Rotate more.
Lead with the elbow.
The assumption is simple: if the movement improves, the music will improve with it.
But what if expressive movement cannot be imagined as an isolated physical action?
What if it first needs a musical reason to exist?
Imagine asking someone to wave their hand without giving them a reason to do so. The movement may be mechanically correct, but it has no direction. Now ask them to greet a friend across the street. The hand moves again—but this time the gesture carries intention. The visible motion may look similar, yet it is animated by something entirely different.
Piano playing presents the same challenge.
A wrist can roll because it has been instructed to roll.
Or it can roll because the imagined sound is already traveling through space.
From the outside, the two movements may look remarkably similar.
From the inside, they are entirely different experiences.
So where does that musical movement begin?
Interestingly, not at the keyboard.
Long before students are asked to play with a particular wrist or elbow motion, they first learn to sing. As they follow a musical line with the voice, the hands begin to accompany that singing. These gestures are not yet piano technique. They simply reflect the movement already present in the musical line.
This may be where the first musical movement is born.
As inner hearing develops, the imagined music gradually becomes richer. It is no longer only a succession of pitches. It begins to acquire direction, texture, harmonic colour, dynamic shape, and a continuous flow between notes. The movement accompanying the singing also changes. It becomes more refined because it is responding to a richer musical image.
Only then do we arrive at the keyboard.
Now the wrist is not asked to invent a movement on its own. It expresses a movement that has already become part of the imagined music.
The same is true of the elbow.
When the musical line reaches beyond the hand, the elbow naturally begins to accompany that direction. The movement is not added as an external technical instruction. It becomes a physical continuation of the musical intention.
This suggests an important distinction.
Imagining an anatomical movement is not necessarily the same as imagining a musical movement.
A pianist may picture the wrist rolling or the elbow traveling sideways, yet the movement can still feel mechanical because it is disconnected from the sound it is meant to express.
When movement already belongs to the imagined music, something different happens.
The wrist follows the movement of the sound.
The elbow follows the journey of the phrase.
The hand is no longer trying to perform a technical exercise. It is giving physical form to an experience that already exists inwardly.
Yet the relationship does not stop there.
Once those movements are experienced at the keyboard, they begin to change the imagined music itself.
A freer wrist reveals a richer sound texture.
A broader elbow motion makes the direction of the sound easier to follow inwardly.
Movement becomes sound.
Sound becomes movement.
Each teaches the other.
Perhaps this is why piano technique cannot be reduced to learning better movements.
The most expressive movements may not begin in the joints at all.
They may begin the moment the music starts to move within us.
