The Learning Path

Most pianists complete The PianoWell Program in six to nine months, though the pace is always their own.

Although the program can be undertaken alongside your studies at a music school, college, or conservatory, the transition is generally more effective when it is approached without the demands of an existing repertoire. Learning two different approaches simultaneously can slow the process and make it more challenging.

Whenever possible, I recommend beginning the program during a break from your regular studies. This allows you to focus fully on the retraining process, practice with a clear and receptive mind, and dedicate approximately 2–3 hours each day to developing the new skills.

  1. Begin

    Introduction

Orientation to the method—why PianoWell was invented, how it differs from traditional teaching, and how to approach the work.

  2. Volume I

    Foundation: Mind & Body

Develop a free, effortless technique from the ground up. Learn the essential skills of PianoWell—including sound imagination, inner singing with glissando and resistance, efficient transfer of arm weight, and natural posture—which form the foundation for everything that follows.

  3. Volume II

Advanced Mental Practice: Sound Imagination & Intonation

Deepen the mental skills established in the previous volume by refining sound imagination and inner singing to a new level of subtlety. Learn to hear harmony, dynamics, voicing, and tonal colour internally before playing, and master more than ten forms of inner singing for articulation—providing the foundation for effortless control, refined musical speech, and exceptionally precise execution.

  4. Volume III

    Deepen Musical Language & Artistry

Learn how to build your own phrasing and musical form using clear structural principles, and use them as a blueprint for deepening your inner singing and intonation, through which you express phrasing and form while playing. Develop a deeper understanding of inner pulse, and strong and weak beats. Together with efficient phrasing and form, these skills bring your technique to an entirely new level of lightness and effortlessness.

Finally, explore the most creative part of the PianoWell System—Artistry—where you learn to perform in the improvised state of mind. This process develops freedom, confidence, and a deeply personal musical voice, allowing every performance to feel natural, expressive, and truly your own.

Concluding Volume III are two of the most important chapters of the PianoWell System: The Weeding Stage and The Unperformance Stage. These chapters teach you, step by step, how to approach even the most challenging virtuoso passages, complete a piece to the highest standard, and prepare through a structured performance routine for your most important performances.

  5. Integrate

    Integration & Performance

Bring it together—incubation, performance-day preparation, and playing from freedom rather than pressure.

Prepare

Begin

Before beginning the three volumes, these introductory studies help you understand the philosophy of the PianoWell System, establish the right mindset, and prepare a healthy, sustainable approach to your retraining.

These are preparatory studies rather than Volume chapters—the groundwork that makes the retraining ahead calmer, clearer, and more sustainable.

The Final Stage

Integration & Performance

The final stage of the PianoWell Program helps you integrate the skills developed throughout the three volumes into long-term artistic growth, performance preparation, and independent musicianship.

Before & After

The change you can hear.

The program is measured not by explanation but by transformation. This recording places a pianist's playing side by side—before beginning the program, and one year later—so the difference can be heard rather than described.

Alberto Pavani

In Their Own Words

Pianists on the process.

Recordings from pianists who have worked through the program—daily practice sessions and reflections on what changed in their playing and their relationship to the instrument.
