Most musicians have experienced inner hearing.

You look at a score and, before touching the keyboard, you can already hear the opening melody in your mind. A conductor silently hears an entire orchestra while studying the score. A composer imagines music long before writing the first note.

In music cognition, this ability is commonly described as auditory imagery or inner hearing—the experience of hearing sound internally without external acoustic input. It is closely related to Gordon's concept of audiation, which emphasizes understanding music internally rather than simply recognizing pitches.

For many musicians, this is where the discussion ends.

But is hearing the notes really enough?

When inner hearing becomes incomplete

Imagine reading a Chopin nocturne.

You hear every pitch accurately. You recognize the harmony. You know the rhythm.

Yet when you sit at the piano, something feels disconnected. The phrase does not breathe. The tone feels ordinary. The movement becomes effortful.

Nothing is technically wrong, yet something essential is missing.

Perhaps inner hearing is more than hearing notes.

What else do we hear?

As I worked with pianists over many years, I gradually realized that every imagined note seemed to carry far more information than pitch alone.

Each note possessed:

  • a harmonic colour,
  • a dynamic character,
  • a tone quality,
  • a place within the musical texture,
  • a direction toward the following note,
  • a sense of phrasing and musical form,
  • and, gradually, even an implied movement.

The sound no longer existed as an isolated event. It became part of a living musical process.

Hearing movement

One idea that transformed my own understanding was that imagined sound itself possesses direction.

A sound does not simply appear and disappear. It stretches. It continues. It flows toward the next sound.

As this directional hearing becomes clearer, the body begins responding differently. The wrist no longer moves because it has been instructed to move. It moves because it is following a sound that already exists inwardly.

Movement becomes the physical reflection of an imagined musical event.

Connecting the invisible

Perhaps the greatest challenge in piano playing is not developing separate skills. It is connecting them:

  • the written score,
  • the imagined sound,
  • the physical movement.

When these remain disconnected, playing often feels mechanical or inconsistent. When they become unified, something changes.

The score no longer tells us only what to play. It begins telling us how the music already exists before a single key is touched. Beyond inner hearing

Research continues to deepen our understanding of auditory imagery, audiation, and musical imagery. These concepts have transformed the way we think about music learning.

My own experience has gradually led me one step further.

Rather than imagining sound alone, I now think of preparing a complete musical representation—one in which the following are no longer separate elements but different expressions of the same musical idea:

  • pitch,
  • sound movement,
  • sound texture,
  • harmony,
  • voicing,
  • dynamics,
  • phrasing,
  • and physical motion.

Inner hearing is often described as an invisible skill. Yet its consequences are surprisingly visible. They appear in the freedom of movement, the naturalness of phrasing, the continuity of musical thought, and ultimately in the sound itself.
